I am an online tutor for Reading Partners at Plummer Reading Center, an elementary school here in DC. I work with a student every Tuesday and Thursday on their literacy, reading, and retention.
I genuinely enjoy making a positive impact on kids who need help with their reading skills, and I feel as though I’ve become more confident as an educator.
Tutoring has a profound biological impact on children, as it can enable brain plasticity, promote the new growth of neurons in the brain, and enhance communicative skills. I also think having a good bond with the student I’m working with goes a long way.
The ability to read and comprehend text effectively is a monumental aspect of socialization and community engagement.
I unfortunately can’t show many pictures because I didn’t want to take a picture of the student, however one volunteer hour goes to the lesson I did on 11/21, and two hours are for the mandated reporter training that I had to do to become a tutor.
